On April 14, 2022, the opening ceremony of the 1st Design Chongqing International Biennale and the 6th Jinwa Award Ceremony kicked off in a cultural and creative street in Jiangbei District, Chongqing.

Design Chongqing Biennale is initiated by Jinwa Award organizing committee. Wang Jumeng, president of Chongqing Yuelai Investment Group Co., LTD., serves as general adviser of the biennale. It is mainly supported by the Chongqing Municipal Culture and Tourism Development Commission, China Design Museum, Chongqing Federation of Industry and Commerce and jointly organized by the Royal Institute of British Architects, Chongqing Architectural Interior Design Federation, Design Superstar, and Watch Cultural Industry Think-Tank.

With the theme of “R-EVOLUTION” and the vision of “Design Awakening of a City”, this biennale is open for free to the public from April 14 to June 12, 2022.

The exhibition is a collection of high-quality works, including representative works of design masters, such as Pritzker Prize judges, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, etc., and the latest architectural projects, such as Clichy-Montfermeil Metro Station in Paris, Naples Central Metro Station in Italy, etc.

Besides, the RIBA Royal Institute of British Architects launched a themed pavilion at this biennale. The pavilion contains the institute’s 188-year retrospective display, international academician theme exhibition, cross-border youth creativity exhibition, and exhibition of works from 88 persons, allowing the audience to have a romantic encounter with England and appreciate the achievements of architectural art over the past century.

As for Chongqing Design, the themed exhibition of Chongqing Centennial Architectural History shows many character profiles, masterpieces, and major events in architectural history during the past 130 years, from 1892 when Chongqing was opened as a port to the time of the 2021 Cuntan International Cruise Port International Design Competition. The audience enjoyed the century-old elegance of Chongqing’s architecture and its changes over time.

In addition to the sorts of exhibitions, there are also various splendid activities, such as Design Chongqing Youth Forum and Designer Music Festival.

The 6th Jinwa Award Ceremony, themed “Redesign the Design”, was also held at the opening ceremony of the biennale. A total of 1,367 works were received this year, an increase of 45% over the previous edition. After evaluation by experts, 54 sets of works won awards.

The first Design Chongqing Biennale, based on the City of Landscape and Beauty, tracks the social change and design trend of Chongqing in the global context, focusing on the issues such as globalism and locality, time and space, humanity and vision, concept and technology, protection and development, ecology and aesthetics, tradition and pioneer, as well as diversity and community.

Through varieties of forms involving exhibitions, summit forums, and literature collection, the biennale intends to achieve cross-domain, multi-dimensional, and high-level design integration.

Centering on people and the noumenon of design culture, the Design Chongqing International Biennale re-examines the due value and cultivation of design, showing the golden age of design in Chongqing and assisting Chongqing’s application for joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as the City of Design.
